Cambridge City Man Critically Injured In Crash

A Cambridge City man was critically injured in a head-on collision in Indianapolis Wednesday night.

Walter Snyder, 77, suffered several broken bones and head trauma in the crash, according to Indiana State Police. He was taken to Reid Hospital.

The accident happened on Ind. 1, north of Delaware Street, just after 6:30 p.m. during rainy conditions.

Snyder, driving a GMC pickup truck, crossed the center line, struck another vehicle and crashed into Chevy truck driven by Whitney Silveira, 23, of Richmond.

Sliveira suffered a head injury and was released from Fayette memorial Hospital in Connersville. The man driving the car that was struck did not suffer injury.

The accident is under investigation.

"Bobby Chupete" Pacifiers Recalled

Grand World Inc., in conjunction with the CPSC, announced a voluntary recall of more than 640,000 “Bobby Chupete” Pacifiers because they fail to meet federal safety standards. The mouth guard of the pacifier is too small, posing a choking hazard to babies and toddlers.

To this date, the there have been no reports of injury associated with the recalled products.

The recalled pacifiers have a ring-shaped handle and heart-shaped mouth guard with two ventilation holes. They were sold in retail stores nationwide in the following colors: aqua, red, white, and yellow.

The pacifiers should be taken from small children to prevent a choking hazard. Consumers can contact Grand World for a refund or replacement.

Indiana Trucker Injured After Shock From Power Line

A truck driver was shocked and critically injured when a grain silo he was hauling on a flatbed truck, hit an overhead power line in Hancock County.

Donald Beck, 39, of Shelbyville, was traveling on a rural road near Maxwell when the accident happened, according to Hancock County authorities.

Beck was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, in Indianapolis, in critical condition with burns.

The silo, which was sideways on the truck, got tangled with live wires overhead, police said. The driver was shocked when he climbed on top of the silo to untangle the wires.

Beck, who worked for Carl R. Moore Construction Co., did not have a permit to haul the oversized load. According to police, the load appeared too high on the flatbed.

The accident is being investigated by the Indiana Department of Labor and Indiana State Police.

Baby Strollers Recalled By Maclaren USA

More than one million Maclaren Baby Strollers are being recalled after 12 children had their fingertips amputated in the stroller hinges in the U.S., according to a CPSC news release.

The CPSC describes the hazard as the following on its Web site: “The stroller’s hinge mechanism poses a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is unfolding/opening the stroller.”

The recall includes Maclaren single and double strollers. The affected models include Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller.

Parents and caregivers should stop using the recalled strollers immediately and contact Maclaren USA for a free repair kit.

Motorcyclist Suffers Serious Injuries In Accident

A motorcycle accident, near Westfield and Kessler Boulevard last night, sent one person to Wishard Hospital in serious condition.

The accident happened when the driver of a Jeep turned onto Westfield and struck a motorcyclist that was traveling south, police said.

The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with serious injuries which are unknown at this time.

The investigation is ongoing. Police are unsure if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Injuries sustained from motorcycle accidents are often times more severe and debilitating than those suffered by the driver of a truck or automobile. For more information on motorcycle accidents and prevention, refer to our help center.

P&G Warned Over Vicks Products With Vitamin C

On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent Proctor & Gamble Co. a warning letter regarding the illegal marketing of two Vicks cold and flu medicines.

The warning, involves Vicks DayQuil Plus and Nyquil Plus, both with vitamin C. According to the agency, the combinations of drug and dietary ingredients have not been proven safe and effective and therefore cannot be marketed legally.

Additionally, the agency said it had previously determined that there was insufficient data to support vitamin C is safe and effective in preventing or treating the common cold.

Earlier in the month, the FDA issued a similar warning but it was quickly retracted. An FDA spokesman said Friday that the letter was “issued prematurely – prior to the completion of an internal process.”

Some OTC drugs are permitted to be marketed without FDA approval, but the products in question failed to comply with its rules and first must be evaluated and approved under the agency’s new drug approval process, according to the AP.

Driver Cited In Tanker Explosion

The driver of a propane tanker that overturned and exploded last week, has been ticketed.

Ronald Tobias, 73, was cited on Monday for unsafe lane movement and for driving too fast to avoid a collision, according to Indiana State Police. The maximum for each fine is $500, but Tobias and/or his company could face insurance costs for damage and repairs to the highway which easily exceed $1 million.

The accident forced the closure of interstates 465 and 69.

The state Department of Transportation says there does not appear to be any structural damage to the bridge under which the tanker exploded.

"Everything points to this being an issue of driver error, and that's based upon people that witnessed the crash, as far as how they discussed how he was driving right before the crash occurred," said ISP 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten.

The investigation, which involves the National Transportation Safety Board, is ongoing.

Crash Splits Car In Half, Two Injured

Two people were injured in a car accident on Cornbread Road Thursday morning. Officials suspect excessive speed may be a factor.

The driver, 21, was airlifted to Indianapolis Hospital after she was found unconscious at the scene with head injuries. A passenger, 20, was treated at Ball Memorial Hospital.

It appears Harvey was traveling west on Cornbread Rd. near Andrews Rd. when the car left the road, struck two telephone poles and hit a tree, according to Sherriff Bill Polk.

Due to the force of impact, the vehicle was split in half, but both driver and passenger were wearing seat belts. The investigation is ongoing, but Polk believes excessive speed was a factor.

Recall - Haunted House Candle Holders Sold At Yankee Candle

Coyne’s & Company, in conjunction with the CPSC, is voluntarily recalling Haunted House Screen Tea Light Holders because the window panes on the screen can ignite, posing a fire hazard.

The company has been informed of three incidents in which the panes caught fire, but no injuries have been reported.

The recall involves haunted house screen tea light holders that were sold nationwide at Yankee Candle stores between August and September 2009.

Consumers should contact Coyne’s & Company or Yankee Candle for a refund. In the meantime, the candle holders should not be used.

Paula Deen Cookware Sold by QVC Recalled

QVC Inc. announced a voluntary recall of Paula Deen Hammered Cast Iron Cookware because the cookware can crack, posing a burn and laceration hazard.

The recall affects about 51,000 units that were distributed by Meyer Trading Co. Ltd. of Hong Kong.

To this date, there have been 79 reports of the cookware cracking while heated. One report involved a minor burn injury.

The recall involves Paula Deen 11-inch cast iron grill pans and griddles. They were sold as QVC item numbers K14984, K11970 and K135024.

The company will be mailing known purchasers refund instructions. But in the meantime the cookware should not be used to avoid injury.
