Crash Splits Car In Half, Two Injured

Two people were injured in a car accident on Cornbread Road Thursday morning. Officials suspect excessive speed may be a factor.

The driver, 21, was airlifted to Indianapolis Hospital after she was found unconscious at the scene with head injuries. A passenger, 20, was treated at Ball Memorial Hospital.

It appears Harvey was traveling west on Cornbread Rd. near Andrews Rd. when the car left the road, struck two telephone poles and hit a tree, according to Sherriff Bill Polk.

Due to the force of impact, the vehicle was split in half, but both driver and passenger were wearing seat belts. The investigation is ongoing, but Polk believes excessive speed was a factor.

SUV Plows Through Indianapolis Home

An SUV plowed through an east side home in Indianapolis on Friday and then left the scene, according to police.

The homeowner, Winnie Withers, 85, was unaware the vehicle struck the house,” said IMPD Sgt. Paul Thompson. “She was sleeping when the SUV struck her house on Friday morning. When she woke, she discovered bricks, glass and debris in her kitchen and a clear view to the outside.”

The gaping hole in the wall of her home, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department, was caused by a hit and run driver. The car struck a tree in her yard and then hit her house. Firefighters say had it not been for the tree, and had it not been a brick house, there is a good chance the vehicle would have ended up in Withers' bedroom, where she was sleeping.

Metro police says they believe the car has extensive damage, including airbag deployment and possible injury to the driver.

Update: Police located the driver of the SUV. Read more here.

An Indianapolis teen, 17, was arrested after veering off the road in a stolen vehicle and striking not one, but two houses on the Southeast side, according to authorities.

No one was home at the damaged residence at the time of the crash, said Capt. Rita Reith, a spokesman for the Indianapolis Fire Department.

The teen was spotted by firefighters while at a gas station at stop 11 Road and Arlington Avenue just after 9:16 a.m. Upon noticing that he looked intoxicated, the firefighters informed police and followed the vehicle at a distance.

The boy, speeding as he left veered off the road, struck a car, then crossed the road and drove through a chain-link fence in the 6100 block of Connie Court, about a quarter-mile from the gas station, said Lt. Jeff Duhamell, a spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The teen was taken to the hospital but he was not injured. So far, he faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident, possession of a stolen vehicle and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Senate Panel Passes Teen Driving Bill

A Senate committee passed a bill that would ban drivers under 18 from using cell phones after hearing emotional testimony from several people who have suffered personal tragedies caused by young, inexperienced drivers.

The Senate Transportation Committee voted 9-1 to endorse the bill, which will now go before a full Senate for consideration, after provisions were made.

New provisions include: teen drivers with learner’s permits would need to log 50 hours of supervised driving experience. Ten of the hours 50 hours will need to be at night – before they are able to apply for a driver’s license.

While behind the wheel, drivers under 18 would be banned from using any type of cell phone or handheld device. Another provision, under the bill, would push the minimum age for obtaining a driver’s license to 16 and six months, if the teen takes drivers education classes, 17 if they do not.

The minimum age for a teen to obtain a learners permit would be moved to 15½. #
