A toddler was killed and her mother hospitalized following a car accident on State Route 252 in Mount Carmel.

The accident happened just after 4:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Investigators at the scene say the woman, 21, lost control of her vehicle and crashed with a pickup truck. According to Indiana State Police, she tried to avoid the accident, but there was simply no time.

The 18-month-old toddler was restrained in her car seat at the time of the accident, officers said. The force of impact knocked the baby from the backseat and the truck landed on top of her.

The driver of the pickup truck was transported to the hospital and is expected to be okay.
