A car accident on Interstate 65 in Clinton County claimed the lives of three people during a rainstorm this afternoon, according to Indiana State Police.

The accident occurred one mile north of Indiana 28 when a Mazda, traveling south on I-65 crossed the median and into the path of a semi-truck that was traveling northbound.

Three people in the Mazda, which had Minnesota license plates, were pronounced dead at the scene. One of the victims was thrown from the vehicle, which was torn in half by the impact of the crash.

"The impact it caused, at the speeds they were probably running - intestate speed - you're going to have a collision like this where the car comes apart," said Sgt. Kim Riley, a public information officer with the Indiana State Police.

"Too much speed for the wet road caused the wreck," said ISP trooper Nate King, who was among the first law enforcement officers to arrive at the scene.

The driver of the semi-truck was not injured in the crash.
