A woman on her way home from the night shift caused a car accident when she apparently fell asleep behind the wheel and struck another vehicle, killing her father-in-law, according to police.

The man, 73, of Bloomfield, was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident occurred on Indiana 54 in Southwestern Indiana.

A helicopter transported his wife and passenger to Methodist Hospital, in Indianapolis, where she was listed in fair condition.

She was returning to Bloomfield after working an overnight shift at a Bloomington business, while her in-laws were traveling the opposite direction along the highway, headed to Bloomington, police said.

"There was a witness following her who indicated that there were no brake lights activated before the crash, so the assumption is that she just fell asleep at the wheel," she said.

While the crash remains under investigation, all evidence points to a car accident that just happened to involve the driver's in-laws.
