A driver reported by 50, 911 calls, for traveling the wrong way on I-465 was killed after crashing head-on in a car crash with another vehicle, also killing that driver.

An Indiana State Police Sergeant said officers believe the driver, 26, got onto I-465 at Allisonville Road, shortly before 3am, traveling south in the northbound lanes.

Driving a red Honda, she crashed with the driver of a blue Pontiac van that was going in the proper direction, in the center. Police had tried to intercept the wrong way driver from many locations on the east side of the city. Police were witness to the crash which knocked the van on its side, before it caught on fire.

Emergency officials were able to get all but one of the van's six occupants out of the van. The driver was killed. The group was on their way home from the airport when the crash happened.

Officers attempting to stop the wrong way driver were prohibited from traveling the wrong way.

"We would be just as liable as that person if we got on (the wrong way)," he said. "Think about it. You just can't turn your lights on and start going the wrong way. You can't. Do you know how many people would freak out? That freaks them out when they see us coming from behind, let alone coming toward them on the interstate. You can't do that."

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. The results of toxicology tests may take up to six weeks.
