Students Not Injured In School Bus Crash In Indianapolis

Two people were injured when a school bus driver failed to stop for stopped traffic ahead, setting off a chain reaction crash.

The bus crash happened just after 7:00 a.m. on 161^st Street, west of US 31. The bus, operated by Deborah A. Mogg, of Indianapolis, was heading eastbound when it struck a stopped Jeep Liberty, according to a statement by Hamilton County sheriff’s deputies.

In total, three other vehicles were affected by the chain reaction – a Jeep Liberty, a pickup truck and another vehicle.

The drivers of the Jeep and pickup truck were transported to the hospital for treatment of what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries such as abrasions, bruises and pain.

At the time of the crash there were 54 students on the bus, none of which were injured.

The investigation is ongoing.

Continental Commuter Plane Crashes In Buffalo

A Continental commuter plane crashed into a home near Buffalo, N.Y. on Thursday night sparking a fiery explosion that killed 44 passengers, 4 crew members and a man inside the home.

Flight 3407 from Newark, New Jersey, was coming in for a landing when it crashed within miles of Buffalo Niagara International Airport in New York.

The aircraft, registered in April 2008, had a clean safety record, said officials, leaving investigators with very few clues as to why the aircraft suddenly plunged minutes before its planned landing.

The flight was operated by Colgan Air Inc., based in Manassas, Va., which is owned by Pinnacle Airlines Corp.

Philip H. Trenary, President & CEO of Pinnacle Airlines Corp., released the following statement:

“We are greatly saddened by this accident. Our prayers are extended to the family and loved ones of those aboard flight 3407 and those affected on the ground. Please know that we will commit all needed resources to assist the NTSB's investigation of this accident and work to ensure that a tragedy such as this does not occur again."

Train And Car Collide; Driver In Serious Condition

A collision between a car and train has landed the driver in the hospital in serious condition.

The accident happened on Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Warman Ave. and Jackson Street on the city’s west side.

The driver, Richard Bault, 44, of Addison, was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash. He was awake and breathing when police arrived on the scene.

The driver was transported to Wishard Hospital where he remains in serious condition.

Warman Avenue is expected to remained closed until 10:30 or later following the accident, to allow officials time to get the vehicle moved and the train tracks inspected. #

US Airways Flight Crashes Upon Takeoff

A US Airways plane dove into the Hudson River after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport in New York. 148 people and four to five crew members were onboard the flight and all appear to be alive.

At the time of the airplane crash, it was snowing and below 20 degrees in New York. Water taxies and ferries rescued passengers who said they smelled smoke before the crash. The pilot radioed air traffic controllers that a flock of birds went into the engine prior to declaring an emergency.

Reported bird/wildlife strikes to aircraft in the U.S. are tracked by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. There have been more than 38,000 strike reports from 1990 to 2001. The Federal Aviation Administration estimates that number is about 20 percent of all strikes that have occurred. #

Students Injured In Frankton School Bus Accident

A school bus carrying 53 middle and high school students collided with a vehicle on Wednesday morning, landing on its side in a central Indiana farm, due to icy road conditions, the sheriff said.

Dozens of children were injured in the bus accident, but authorities say none appear to be life-threatening.

When emergency crews arrived at the scene, all the students were off the bus.

The driver of the vehicle, 17-year-old Kiesha Lamontagne, was unable to stop and struck the passenger side of the bus on a rural road about 35 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

Twenty-five students were taken to Community Hospital. Injuries involved a 12-year-old boy who needed plastic surgery for severe facial cuts and a 13-year-old boy who suffered a broken collarbone, according to the hospital’s marketing director, Katy Harrison Troxell.

The remaining students were taken to hospitals in Elwood and Anderson for minor injuries.

Seven other Evansville area school buses went off the road, but no injuries have been reported. Weather-related accidents are to blame for at least five deaths in Indiana since Tuesday night.
