Motorcyclist Suffers Serious Injuries In Accident

A motorcycle accident, near Westfield and Kessler Boulevard last night, sent one person to Wishard Hospital in serious condition.

The accident happened when the driver of a Jeep turned onto Westfield and struck a motorcyclist that was traveling south, police said.

The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with serious injuries which are unknown at this time.

The investigation is ongoing. Police are unsure if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Motorcyclist Critically Injured In Crash With SUV

A motorcyclist was critically injured in a motorcycle accident Friday after being struck by an SUV in a central Lubbock intersection, police said.

The motorcyclist, 29, was transported to University Medical Center in critical condition after the accident which involved his Harley Davidson motorcycle and a Jeep Liberty. According to a hospital supervisor, he remained in critical condition Friday night at UMC.

He was riding his bike north on Indiana Avenue when he was struck by a westbound SUV that ran a stop sign on 32^nd Street.

The driver of the SUV, 22, and other passengers in the vehicle were not injured.

Terre Haute Man Killed In Motorcycle Accident

A Terre Haute man, 44, was killed in a motorcycle accident early Saturday morning and two others were injured.

The accident happened when a vehicle pulled into his path near Ash Street.

Tim Rice, 44, died at the scene. Derrick Burdette, 25, sustained serious injuries and is in critical condition at Methodist Hospital. And John Campbell, 39, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

The two men were part of a group of riding motorcycles when their bikes struck a parked car, According to Det. David Thompson of the Terre Haute City Police Department.

Police are investigating the crash and refused to comment on whether drugs or alcohol were suspected.

Two Killed in Motorcycle Crash in LaPorte

Two people were killed in a motorcycle accident on Tuesday, when their bike struck a sport utility vehicle in northwestern Indiana, said authorities.

One of the vehicles allegedly crossed the centerline at U.S. 421 in Westville, 20 miles east of Gary, according to LaPorte County Chief Deputy Coroner, John Sullivan.

J. Ray, 20, of South Haven and A. Esser, 33, of Valparaiso were pronounced dead at the scene. Ray was passenger on the motorcycle driven by Esser, said Sullivan.

Both driver and passenger landed in a soybean field 20 feet away after being thrown from the bike due to the force of the crash.

The driver of the SUV was transported to St. Anthony Memorial Health Center in Michigan City with non-life threatening injuries.

Evansville Man Injured in Motorcycle Accident

A man was injured in a motorcycle accident, on Sunday night, in Newburgh when he tried to steer his motorcycle between two vehicles, striking one of them, according to a news release.

The man, 51, of Evansville was thrown from his bike in the crash, which occurred at 8:00 p.m. on Indiana 66 and Bell Road. The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

He was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center. As of this morning there were no updates on his condition.

According to a news release from Warrick County Sheriff’s office, the man was driving his Harley Davidson motorcycle when he struck a Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by a Newburgh woman.

The accident is under investigation, according to officials and the full extent of injuries suffered by the motorcyclist is not known, however, the news release lists the nature of injuries as head trauma.

Indiana Motorcyle Fatalities on the Rise

The number of Indiana motorcycle fatalities reached a record high in 2007 due to a combination of alcohol use, riders not wearing helmets and a lack of rider experience.

Motorcycle ownership has almost doubled in Indiana over the past ten years. More motorcycles are traveling the highways and they are involved in more highway accidents. In 2007, motorcycles and mopeds in Indiana were involved in more than 500 accidents, of which 116 were fatal collisions.

The most likely person to die in an Indiana motorcycle accident is a 40 to 50-year-old man riding alone on the weekend, according to records kept by the state. The deadliest time for a motorcycle accident is late afternoon Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

When you take away experience and helmets, the numbers rise even further. Some 50 percent of those killed were not wearing a helmet and more than 60 percent were new motorcycle riders.

Hoosier Helmet Law Proposed

A mandatory helmet law for Hoosier motorcyclists is once again up for consideration. Thomas Wyss, Indiana State Senator, says if a new helmet law is proposed, he will hold a hearing to investigate motorcycle accident statistics.

One motorcyclist said there is no excuse for people to not wear a helmet while on their bike. With motorcycle deaths raising 80% over the last ten years, many riders feel it is important to wear a helmet while riding.

The current laws in Indiana say people that are 18 or under are the only riders that must wear a helmet. There are currently 20 states, including Washington DC, that enforce laws requiring helmet use.

Florida, another state that does not require motorcyclists to wear helmets, recently launched Ride Proud. Dress Loud. A campaign designed to encourage bikers to wear bright clothing so other motorists will see them on the road.

Indiana State Police Investigating Fatal Motorcycle Accident

Indiana State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle accident that claimed the life of a Brazilian man who was thrown from his motorcycle during a two-vehicle collision in front of the Brazilian National Guard Armory, on Friday.

The motorcyclist was struck from behind by a 2007 Chevrolet Impala that was registered to the federal government and driven by a U.S. Navy Recruiter, of Terre Haute.

The man was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash that occurred on Indiana 59. He was pronounced dead at St. Vincent Clay Hospital, in Brazil. No tickets have been cited in the crash.

Officials believe both vehicles were traveling 60 mph prior to the accident. By the time the vehicle noticed the motorcyclist was breaking, there was no time to avoid a collision. Witness say the motorcycle braked hard in front of the vehicle, although, they were unable to tell how close in distance it was.

A computer program from a state crash reconstruction officer at the scene gave a preliminary indication that both vehicles were likely going 60 mph. The state has not completed its reconstruction of the accident, officers said.

Wisonsin Man Killed in Motorcycle Accident in Indiana

A motorcycle accident on Interstate 74 left one person dead, according to Indiana State Police. The accident happened just west of Crawfordsville after 10:00 a.m.

A preliminary investigation of the crash shows the driver, 61, of Ixonia, Wisconsin, was traveling westbound on I-74 when according to witnesses, he leaned to the right of his motorcycle. Officials believe that caused the motorcycle to veer to the right shoulder of the interstate.

He was thrown from his bike and came to rest on the shoulder of the highway. The bike traveled about 100 feet before coming to rest. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Montgomery County Coroner.

The motorcyclist was alone at the time of the crash and no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The highway was shut down for over an hour while officials investigated the scene.

Noblesville Woman Killed in Motorcycle Accident

A Noblesville woman was killed in a motorcycle accident when she ran into the back of an SUV on Indiana 135 in Brown County this weekend.

The woman, 43, was riding her 2007 Harley Davidson when a Honda CR-V slowed for a dog that had run out onto the roadway.

She was unable to stop and hit the right rear of the SUV which caused her to be thrown from the motorcycle and into a ditch on the east side of the road, according to Brown County Sheriff.

At the time of the accident she was wearing a helmet; however, it was not a full sized helmet but rather an upper half size helmet. Her husband was following on another motorcycle and witnessed the accident.

EMS arrived on the scene and worked to revive her but it was too late, she died from the injuries suffered in the accident. The Brown County coroner was called to the scene and is investigating. The cause of death is pending the coroner’s report.
