An Indiana State trooper was injured and a truck driver was killed in a separate – but related – truck accident, Tuesday on Indiana 49, according to coroner and police reports.

The accident occurred just after 11 a.m. in Chesterton near the Toll Road entrance when a Centrella Foods semi-trailer struck a Buckeye Haulers flat-bed trailer.

The impact of the crash crushed the cab of the Centrella Foods truck, killing the driver instantly. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash pushed the Buckeye trailer, carrying steel coils, through the intersection, shearing a box truck in half.

The driver of the box truck said they had just bought gas and were waiting at the red light when the Buckeye trailer struck them. The men were lucky and escaped with only minor injuries.

Chesterton police and fire department, along with hazmat and coroner’s officials were on the scene to investigate the crash. No further information is available at this time pending a full investigation.

An Indiana trooper, responding to the call, was taken to the hospital after crashing his vehicle on his way to the scene. The trooper was treated for a bump on his head and a broken wrist.
