Trucking Accident Closes Down Highway for Tanker Spill Clean Up

A trucking accident, Monday, forced U.S. 31 to close while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency tested for the after-effects of liquid petroleum gas released in the accident.

The accident occurred when the gas truck slowed to a stop for a train and a second truck crashed into the tanker. One of the semi-trucks was hauling liquid natural gas (cryogenic liquid), according to reports by Indiana State Police.

The Southbound lanes of U.S. 31 are expected to remain closed for approximately three days, according to officials. Residents within a half-mile of the accident were asked to evacuate as a safety measure.

The driver of the second truck was pinned inside his cab for several hours until emergency responders could extricate him. He was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. His condition was not immediately known Tuesday morning.
The driver of the stopped truck was not seriously injured.
